Hokies face two ACC foes this weekend

Tech at NC State Friday, home for North Carolina Sunday

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is set for a pair of weekend ACC matches beginning with a road contest at NC State on Friday, March 17 at 3 p.m. The Hokies will return home to host No. 4 North Carolina at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 19.

THE HOKIES (5-6, 0-1 ACC)
Virginia Tech rolled past James Madison 7-0 the last time out. The Hokies shutout the Dukes with straight set wins in all six singles matches. Tech fell to Duke 6-1 in the team’s ACC opener. Freddy Mesmer picked up the point for the Hokies with a win on six.

Jai Corbett is ranked 74th in the ITA and has a 4-4 tally in the one this season. Henrik Korsgaard comes in at No. 107 with a 3-3 tally on the spring. Mesmer is undefeated for the Hokies at 5-0 while Jason Kros is 5-4. Mitch Harper has a mark of 5-5.

THE WOLFPACK (9-7, 0-1 ACC)
NC State fell to North Carolina 7-0 the last time out. The Wolfpack’s 51st-ranked duo of Alexis Galarneau and Nick Horton did pick up a win over UNC’s 17th ranked pair in the No. 1.

Horton is 73rd in the ITA singles with a 7-7 tally this spring. Galarneau comes into the match ranked 116th with a 11-3 mark, including a 7-1 record at the two. Georgiy Malyshev is 11-5 on the spring while Igor Saveljic is 10-6.

THE TAR HEELS (14-2, 2-1 ACC)
North Carolina enters the match ranked fourth in the ITA standings and had the 7-0 win over the Wolfpack in the team’s last outing. UNC won all six singles matches in straight sets.

Ronnie Schneider, ranked 19th, leads the team with a 11-2 tally including 9-2 at one. Blumberg is 61st in the ITA and has a 10-2 mark on the spring and is 8-1 on court two. Kelly rounds out the ranked Tar Heels at 123rd and has posted a 11-0 record in the spring. Blaine Boyden is 12-0 and Jack Murray has a record of 12-3 this spring.

THE SERIES
The Hokies are 16-7 all-time against the Wolfpack and had the 6-1 win last season in Blacksburg. Corbett and Harper both claimed singles wins for the Hokies in the match.

Against the Tar Heels, Tech trails 24-4 in the series, and was edged last season by then top-ranked UNC 5-2. Corbett had a win in the match on court five.

Up Next: Tech travels to Wake Forest on Tuesday, March 21 for a 4 p.m. match against the Demon Deacons.
