Hokies to compete in Blue Gray National Tennis Classic

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is on the road Feb. 24-25 competing in the 69th Annual Blue-Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Alabama. Joining the Hokies at the event are Alabama, Auburn, Boise State, Princeton, Rice, South Carolina and Texas Tech.

The event’s first round will start on Friday as the Hokies (3-3) face Alabama (5-4) at 9 a.m. Tech swept past College of Charleston 7-0 the last time out in a history-making match that featured video replay for the first time in a collegiate dual. The Tide fell to No. 12 Oklahoma State 7-0 and No. 14 Oklahoma 5-2.

Tech is led on the season by No. 49 Jai Corbett who has tallied a 4-1 record this season in the one. Mitch Harper has posted a 4-2 mark while Jason Kros is also 4-1. Freddy Mesmer is 3-0 and Henrik Korsgaard is 2-0 and ranked 97th in the ITA.

Leading the Tide is No. 62 Mazen Osama with a 4-2 tally in the one. Thibault Cancel is 5-2 at two while Edson Ortize has posted a 6-2 overall tally including a 5-1 mark at five.

This marks the fifth meeting between the two teams all-time with the Hokies holding the 3-1 advantage. The teams opened last year against each other with Tech winning 5-2 in Tuscaloosa.
