BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in the season home opener, defeating St. Bonaventure 7-0 in the first match followed by a 6-1 decision over Davidson in the evening match.
Tech (3-2) got out to an early lead over the Bonnies winning the doubles point as Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard paired up for the 6-1 win on court one over Victor Blanco and Guillermo Garcia. Alexandre Ribeiro and Feliksas and Sakalauskas secured the point as they rolled to a 6-1 win on three over Hristo Hristov and John Rutkowski.
The Hokies took the 2-0 lead as George Cartledge took a quick 6-1, 6-1 win over Hristov on six. Freddy Mesmer put Tech on top 3-0 as he defeated Rutkowski 6-2, 6-1 at four. The Hokies secured the team win with Abraham Asaba’s 6-3, 6-1 victory over Garcia on court three.
Mitch Harper rolled to the win on court one, defeating Blanco 6-4, 6-1 as Tech took the 5-0 lead. Sakalauskas and and Jason Kros rounded out the scoring for the Hokies with Sakalauskas picking up the 6-0, 6-4 win on five and Kros securing a 6-3, 7-5 win on two.
The Hokies got off to another strong start in the second match of the day as Tech again took the doubles point. Corbett paired up with Asaba for the win in the No. 1, defeating Axel Fries and J.B. Gough 6-3. The point was secured by Korsgaard and Kros at three where they had the 6-4 win over David Hager and Artem Khrapko.
Corbett made quick work of his opponent, Shamael Chaudhry, on court one to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead winning 6-3, 6-0. Mesmer picked up his second win of the day, defeating Jack Riazzi 6-2, 6-1 on court six. Ribeiro secured the team win for the Hokies on two, defeating Hager 6-0, 6-2.
Harper gave the Hokies a 5-0 lead, defeating Khrapko 6-3, 6-4 at three while Kros rounded out the scoring for the Hokies with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Gough in the four.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Feb. 21 hosting College of Charleston at 1:30 p.m.
