AUSTIN – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled 10th-ranked Texas this afternoon, but the Longhorns edged the Hokies for a 4-3 win at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
Tech fell behind after the Longhorns (7-1) claimed the doubles point, but the Hokies did get the win at the two with Mitch Harper and Alexandre Ribeiro defeating Colin Markes and Christian Sigsgaard, 6-3.
Texas secured the team win, winning the first three finished singles matches on courts six, three and five. The Hokies got on the board next as Henrik Korsgaard defeated the Longhorn’s 36th-ranked Yuya Ito in three sets. Korsgaard won the first 6-4, but Ito came back for the second with the same score. In the final tiebreak, Korsgaard rolled to a 10-3 decision for the win.
Ribeiro battled for the win on two where he squared off against George Goldhoff. In the opening set Ribeiro defeated Goldhoff in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5). The second set also went to a tiebreak with the two trading points until Ribeiro pulled ahead to win it 7-6 (12-10).
Jai Corbett had a big win on the day in the No. 1, knocking off sixth-ranked Christian Sigsgaard. The Tech player fell behind in the count after dropping the first set 6-1. Corbett battled back to win the second one 7-5 before securing the win in the third 6-4.
The Hokies will return to the court, Saturday, Feb. 11 for the home spring opener, hosting a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure and Davidson at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
