Tech edged by San Diego 4-2 in season opener
Hokies win doubles point

LOS ANGELES – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opened the 2017 spring season in a battle against San Diego, falling 4-2 to the Toreros on Saturday morning at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
Tech (0-1) opened the day strong, claiming the doubles point to get out to the 1-0 lead in the match. Henrik Korsgaard paired up with Jason Kros in the No. 3 where the duo rolled to a 6-1 win over Alexandros Araouzos and Gui Osorio. The Hokies secured the win on court one with Jai Corbett and newcomer Abraham Asaba teaming up to knock off Filip Vittek and Joshua Page, 6-2.
The Toreros (2-0) evened it up with a win on court five of singles as Gui Osorio defeated Asaba 6-1, 6-4. USD went on top 2-1 on court two where Guus Koevermans secured the 6-3, 6-1 decision over Tech’s Alexandre Ribeiro.
Virginia Tech answered to knot it up at 2-2 with Mitch Harper’s 6-1, 7-6(6) victory over Page on court three, but the Toreros reclaimed the advantage on court six. USD’s Araouzos battled with Tech newcomer Feliksas Sakalauskas as the pair went to three sets. The Hokies freshman took the first set 6-2, but Araouzos rallied to win the next two 6-3, 6-0.
The deciding match came down to court one where Corbett and Vittek squared off. Vittek won the opening set 6-3, but Corbett responded to take the second 6-2. The Toreros player came back to win the third 6-2 to secure the team win.
Tech will be back on the court tomorrow, playing in the consolation match against either ETSU or USC (currently on court). Match time is 1 p.m. ET at Marks Stadium.
