BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech doubles team of Jai Corbett and Alex Ribeiro was edged by on Tuesday in the final round of the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional Championship at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
In the opening set the two teams traded points and were tied at 4-4 before the Richmond duo of Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa held on serve and broke the Tech pair to win in it 6-4. The second set played out much the same way with the two teams keeping it close as UR held the late 6-5 lead before the Hokies held on serve to tie it up at 6-6.
In the tiebreak, Corbett and Ribeiro led at 5-2, but the Spiders responded with three unanswered to knot it at 5-5. The teams traded points on the next several rallies and were tied at 8-8 before Richmond scored two straight to secure the set 7-6(10-8).
Dunbar was also on court in the singles final, but UVA’s JC Aragone claimed the Atlantic Region title 6-1, 6-4.
The Hokies are back on the court Nov. 4-6 at the UNCW Invitational in Wilmington, North Carolina.
