BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team is still going strong, picking up wins on Saturday at the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Tech got off to a strong start in the morning, picking up four wins in doubles to advance into Sunday’s quarterfinal round. Jai Corbett and Alexandre Ribeiro paired up for a win over Temple’s Uladzimir Dorash and Filip Stipcic 8-3.
The Tech duo followed up with an 8-3 decision over Pepe Nunez and Sam Perelman from Old Dominion.
Mitch Harper and Freddy Mesmer also teamed up for the Hokies, picking up an 8-5 win over Georgetown’s pair of Peter Beatty and Yannick Mahlangu. Harper and Mesmer took the 8-2 victory over Penn State’s Matt Galush and Henry Gordon in the next round.
In singles action, Mesmer advances to the round of 32 after picking up a straight set win over Richmond’s Caleb Troy, 6-1, 6-1. Corbett moves into the next round with a 6-4, 6-2 decision against Duquesne’s Adam Blasinsky.
Harper advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Pally Ray of George Mason.
George Cartledge battled for a win on Saturday, knocking off Temple’s Uladzimir Dorash in three sets. Cartledge opened with a 6-2 win in the opening set, but faltered in the second as Dorash took it 6-3. The Tech player battled back in the third to hold on for the 7-5 win.
Jason Kros will play in the round of 32 on Sunday as he took the 6-3, 6-4 win over Georgetown’s Peter Beatty.
Tech will return to the court at 10 a.m. on Sunday with the quarterfinals of doubles. Following those matches will be the round of 32 and round of 16 singles.
