BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up several wins in the opening day of main draw competition at the 2016 ITA Atlantic Regional at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Tech claimed four singles wins and a victory in doubles to move into the second round. Freddy Mesmer paired up with Mitch Harper to start the day in doubles. The Tech pair outlasted Navy’s duo of Krishna Jana and Andre Majkic 8-7(6).
The Hokies took to the court in singles where Mesmer claimed another win, defeating George Washington’s Christos Hadjigeorgio 6-4, 7-6(5). Jason Kros advanced in singles with a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Richmond’s Alex Hahn.
George Cartledge knocked off Noah Sutter of Penn State with straight set scores of 6-3, 7-5 while newcomer Henrik Korsgaard had the 6-1, 6-2 decision against Fernando Sala of George Washington.
Virginia Tech will return to the court on Saturday at 10 a.m. for the next round of doubles. Joining Mesmer and Harper on the court will be Jai Corbett and Alexandre Ribeiro who had a first round bye in doubles.
Corbett, Harper and Ribeiro will also take to the court in singles on Saturday after having byes in the opening round.
