TULSA, Okla. – Alexandre Ribeiro and Mitch Harper picked up a pair of wins each to lead the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team on Saturday during the opening day of the 2016 ITA Men’s Tennis All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Freshman Ribeiro advanced in the pre-qualifying draw as he opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Samford’s Jake Faundez. Ribeiro followed that up by defeating Valpraiso’s Charlie Emhardt 6-3, 7-5.
Ribeiro will be back on the court on Sunday to face North Florida’s Jefta Kecic who is seeded 17th in the draw.
Harper opened with a win over Marquette’s Mackenzie Stearns with straight set scores of 6-2, 6-3. He took the win over Abilene Christian’s Henry Adams to move on in the prequalifying draw.
In the next round, Harper will face Middle Tennessee’s Ayed Zatar Cordero who is seeded ninth in the draw.
Jai Corbett and Henrik Korsgaard fell in their opening round matches.
Corbett faltered to Valpraiso’s Chad Kissell 6-3, 6-4. Korsgaard got off to a strong start against Columbia’s Adam Ambrozy, winning the opening set 7-6(4), but Ambrozy responded to win the next two 6-3, 6-1.
The Hokies will be back on the court tomorrow in the next round of the prequalifying draw as well as the consolation bracket.
