ATHENS, Ga. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team opened the 49th Annual Southern Intercollegiates on Friday with seven wins in singles at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Georgia.
Tech claimed five wins in the Division II singles flight with Freddy Mesmer taking the win in a play-in match, defeating Vanderbilt’s Tate Allwardt 7-5, 6-4. Mesmer followed that up with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over UCF’s Mariano Porter.
George Cartledge also had a win for the Hokies in the opening round as he knocked off Tennessee’s Sunay Bhat 6-1, 6-0. Newcomer Henrick Korsgaard kicked off his collegiate career with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Armstrong State’s Luca Cerin. Jason Kros wrapped up the singles wins for the Hokies as he had a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7, 7-5 win over Lander’s Alex Springer.
In the round of 32, Korsgaard advanced defeating Miami’s Kevin Bondar after dropping the first set 4-6. Koorsgaard rallied to win the next two 6-4, 6-3.
Mesmer claimed a third win on Friday to advance into Saturday’s round of 16 as he knocked off Lander’s Omar Elmoslemany with straight set scores of 6-3, 7-6
Louisville’s George Hedley had the win over Cartledge, defeating the Tech player 7-5, 6-3. Kros fell in his second set to Texas Tech’s Jackson Cobb who claimed the match 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday morning with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles.
