BLACKSBURG – A young Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will take the court this weekend as the Hokies travel to Athens, Georgia for the 49th Annual Southern Intercollegiates hosted by UGA at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Hokies graduated six seniors last season, including 2016 NCAA Final Four participant Joao Monteiro who was part of five Hokies who appeared in a combined 374 dual matches during their careers.
Returning for the Hokies this season are Jai Corbett, Mitch Harper, Freddy Mesmer, George Cartledge and Jason Kros. They are joined by newcomers Henrik Korsgaard and Alexandre Ribeiro.
The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. Play is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. with Division I and II singles matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. All Division III matches on Friday will be played at the UGA intramural courts, with Day One action set to conclude with Divisions I and II doubles.
Ribeiro, Corbett and Harper will take the court on Friday in the Division I, top-flight of the singles event while Cartledge, Korsgaard, Mesmer and Kros will be in the Division II flight.
Joining the Hokies at the annual event are student-athletes from: Arkansas, Armstrong State, Baylor, Belmont, Central Florida, Clemson, East Tennessee State, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Florida, Gardner-Webb, Georgia, Georgia College, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Lander, Lipscomb, Louisville, Miami, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, UNC Charlotte, Old Dominion, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt.
