WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Senior Joao Monteiro was named first team VaSID Men's Tennis Singles All-State while classmate Andreas Bjerrehus earned second team honors. The pair earned first team honors for doubles as announced Wednesday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
Monteiro wrapped up the season having advanced further in the NCAA Singles Championship than any other Tech player in program history, making the final four and earning All-American honors. He finished the season ranked ninth in the ITA and second in the Atlantic Region with a 37-12 overall record, including 15-11 against nationally ranked opponents. During his run at the tournament, he defeated the nation’s 8th-ranked and 4th-ranked en route to the semifinals.
Bjerrehus recorded a 17-5 tally in duals with a 13-5 mark at the two to finish the season 61st in the ITA and fifth in the Atlantic Region. He represented the Hokies in the fall at the ITA All-American Championships. Outside of Tech, Bjerrehus represented his native country of Denmark in the Davis Cup this year.
Monteiro and Bjerrehus ranked in the top-25 in doubles throughout the spring and finished 23rd in the ITA and third in the Atlantic Region with an 11-4 record in the one. The duo represented the Hokies at the NCAA Doubles Championship this spring and at the ITA All-American in the fall.
This is Monteiro’s first All-State honor and Bjerrehus’ second.
