TULSA, Okla. – Virginia Tech senior Joao Monteiro falls in the NCAA Men’s Tennis semifinals on Sunday afternoon after a historic run in the national event.

Monteiro faced UCLA’s 6th-ranked and three-time All-American Mackenzie McDonald in the semifinal round. The Bruins’ player won the opening set 6-2, but Monteiro rallied to take the second set 6-3. In the final set the two were tied at 2-2 before McDonald took a 4-3 lead. McDonald was able to close out the set winning the next two points for the 6-3 decision.

Monteiro wraps up the season having advanced further in the NCAA Singles Championship than any other Tech player in program history. He finishes the season with a 37-12 overall record, including 15-11 against nationally ranked opponents. During his run at the tournament, he defeated the nation’s 8th-ranked and 4th-ranked en route to the semifinals.
