Monteiro moves into NCAA singles Elite 8
Tech senior knocks off defending national champion

TULSA, Okla. – Virginia Tech senior Joao Monteiro advances into the Elite Eight on Friday afternoon at the 2016 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship.

Monteiro defeated the defending national champion and eighth-ranked UVA’s Ryan Shane. After falling in the opening set 6-1, Monteiro rallied in the second with the two players tied at 5-5. Monteiro won the final two points to force the third set where he rolled to a 6-2 win to secure his place in the Elite Eight.

In the quarterfinals, Monteiro will face Illinois’ fourth-ranked Aleks Vukic who defeated UNC’s Ronnie Schneider in the Sweet 16.
