Monteiro advances to NCAA singles second round
Tech player moves to round of 32

TULSA, Okla. - Virginia Tech men's tennis senior Joao Monteiro advances into the second round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Monteiro knocks off USC's 41st-ranked Nick Crystal in straight-sets with scores of 6-4, 6-3. The last Hokie to move past the opening round was Amerigo Contini in 2014.

He moves into the second round to face Tulsa's 48th-ranked Or Ram-Harel tomorrow. Monteiro will also take the court in the opening round of doubles with teammate Andreas Bjerrehus.
