No. 45 Hokies take to the road for Duke, No. 1 UNC

BLACKSBURG – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team takes to the road to face ACC foes Duke and top-ranked North Carolina over the weekend. Tech will face the Blue Devils on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. before taking on the Tar Heels on Sunday, March 27 at 1 p.m.

Tech (11-4, 3-2 ACC) is coming off a 6-1 win over Louisville the last time out. The Hokies got the doubles point early and won five of the six singles matches over the Cardinals.

Joao Monteiro, ranked 21st, leads the Hokies with a 9-3 record in duals, playing in the one. Andreas Bjerrehus entered the rankings this week at 74th and has a 10-2 mark, appearing most often in the No. 2. Edoard Tessaro, ranked 72nd, has a 7-3 mark, including 4-2 at four. Amerigo Contini has also had a solid spring for the Hokies with a 9-3 record while Jai Corbett is also 9-3. Mitch Harper is 8-4 and Aaron Gomez is 5-0.

In doubles, the Hokies pair of Bjerrehus and Monteiro are up to seventh in the ITA standings, having a 9-1 record in the No. 1. Corbett and Harper are 9-2 in spring, including 7-2 at the three.

Duke (8-9, 2-3 ACC) had a 5-2 win over Boston College in the team’s last outing. The Blue Devils had the doubles point and won four of the six singles matches against the Eagles, falling on courts three and five.

Nicolas Alvarez, ranked 19th, leads the Blue Devils with a 7-8 record in the No. 1 this season. Catalin Mateas is 11-6, playing primarily at the two with a 5-4 mark. Vincent Lin has posted an 11-7 record, including 5-4 in the No. 3. Ryan Dickerson is 8-3 with a 4-2 record at the five.

North Carolina’s (18-1, 3-1 ACC) only loss this season was a 4-3 fall at Florida State earlier in March. The Tar Heels last defeated NC State 5-2 in Raleigh. After getting the doubles point, UNC fell behind in singles with the Wolfpack winning the next two points on courts one and two. The Tar Heels answered to win the remaining matches to secure the win.

UNC has five players ranked in the latest ITA standings. Ronnie Schneider leads UNC at 23rd with a 13-3 record, including 8-2 at the two. Brett Clark, ranked 37th, is 15-1 this spring with a 9-1 mark in the No. 3. Ranked 46th, Brayden Schnur is 4-7 with a 4-6 record at No. 1 while Robert Kelly comes in at 82nd with a 16-1 tally, including 10-1 at five. Jack Murray rounds out the ranked players at 95th with a 14-1 overall record and 8-1 in four.

The Tar Heels also have two doubles pairs ranked with Clark and Kelly at third in the ITA, having posted a 12-5 record in the No. 1. Schnur and Murray are 31st and are 7-3 in the No. 2.
