No. 19 Virginia Tech rolls past UMBC 7-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 19th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team swept past UMBC 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Virginia Tech (5-2) got out to the early lead over UMBC (1-8) after winning the doubles point. Jai Corbett and Mitch Harper paired up in the No. 2 to defeat Eliott Loubatie and Melker Svard 6-2. Tech’s 11th-ranked duo of Andreas Bjerrehus and Joao Monteiro secured the point with a 6-4 win over Justin Carter and Alex Drean on court one.

Freddy Mesmer got the first point in singles, downing Kevin Hsieh on court six, 6-1, 6-4. The Hokies went up 3-0 as Corbett defeated Loubatie 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4.

Virginia Tech clinched the team win in the No. 1 where 13th-ranked Monteiro gave up just two games, defeating Carter 6-0, 6-2.

Amerigo Contini picked up another point for the Hokies with a 6-3, 6-1 decision at the three. Bjerrehus and Harper rounded out the scoring. Bjerrehus had a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Svard in the No. 2 while Harper had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Biyik Akinshemoyin at five.

The Hokies will be back on the court Thursday, Feb. 25 when Tech hosts College of Charleston and James Madison in a doubleheader. Tech will face the Cougars at 11 a.m. followed by the Dukes at 5 p.m.
