FLUSHING, N.Y. – Virginia Tech’s Joao Monteiro picked up a pair of wins on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the 2015 USTA/ITA Indoor National Championships at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.

Monteiro opened the day with a win over Ohio State’s redshirt freshman Hugo di Feo, defeating the Buckeyes’ player 6-2, 7-5 to move into the quarterfinals. Di Feo is ranked 10th on the ITA newcomer's list.

In the next round, Monteiro squared off against a familiar foe, taking on 8th-ranked and top-seeded Thai Kwiatkowski of rival Virginia. Monteiro rolled in the opening set, 6-1, but the two battled in the second. The pair were tied at 6-6 to force the tiebreaker where Monteiro secured the win 7-4.

Monteiro moves into tomorrow’s semifinals where he will take on Tulane’s No. 10 (seeded third) Dominik Koepfer.
