FLUSHING, N.Y. – Virginia Tech senior Joao Monteiro claimed a win on the opening day of the 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Monteiro, ranked 70th in the preseason ITA poll, knocked off 33rd-ranked Diego Hidalgo of Florida in the opening round. The two kept it close in the first set and were tied at 6-6 to go in to the tiebreaker. After falling behind 6-4 in the tiebreaker, Monteiro rallied to score four straight points to win it 8-6. In the second set, Monteiro claimed it 6-3.
In the next round, Monteiro will face Ohio State’s redshirt freshman Hugo di Feo who is seeded fifth in the field was tabbed No. 10 in the newcomer rankings. Feo defeated Georgia Gwinnett’s Kevin Konfederak 6-4, 6-7(5) 6-3 to advance.
Friday’s schedule will feature two rounds of singles.
