BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech senior men’s tennis player Joao Monteiro is set to compete in the 2015 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships beginning Thursday, Nov. 12 at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Monteiro, ranked 70th, will represent the Hokies and ITA Atlantic Region after winning the singles title at the regional event back in October. He defeated Old Dominion’s Adam Moundir 6-3, 7-6(4) in the finals.
The 32-player field consists of 12 regional champions, eight players who finished in the final rounds of the ITA All-American Championships, three wildcards, the USTA/ITA Super Bowl Champion, the Oracle/ITA Masters Champion and seven at-large selections.
Monteiro will face Florida’s 33rd-ranked Diego Hidalgo who is an at-large selection for the event.
Singles matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday with Monteiro slated to take the court at 11:30.
