WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a strong final day at the Wake Forest Fall Invitational, winning three singles flights on Sunday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Freddy Mesmer won the C1 Singles flight, defeating Georgia State’s Felipe Jaworski 6-4, 6-4. In the C2 Singles, George Cartledge took Kentucky’s Gus Benson to three sets. Winning the first set 6-3, Cartledge fell in the second 6-3. The Tech player rallied to win the third set, securing the match 6-4.
In the D2 Singles, Rafael Ribas battled Joseph Bishop of Georgia State. The pair went back and forth in the first set and were tied at 6-6, but Ribas claimed the tiebreaker 7-4. Bishop took the second set 6-3, but the two again battled in the deciding set. Tied at 6-6, Ribas again secured the set in the tiebreaker, this time 7-5 to win the match.
In doubles, Jason Kros and Mesmer teamed up to finish third in the B3 flight. The Tech duo defeated ECU’s Casey Countee and Will Bissett 8-3.
Cartledge and Ribas paired up in the consolation finals of the C1 Doubles to defeat Liberty’s Max Borcuti and
Jason Burgess 8-5.
