Hokies have strong opening day at Wake Forest Fall Invite
Tech advances on first day

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a strong opening day at the 2015 Wake Forest Fall Invite at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

In singles, Tech advanced in several flights. Freddy Mesmer moved on in the C1 singles, defeating UNCG’s James Flynn 6-3, 6-2. In the next round Mesmer dropped Duke’s Jason Lapidus 6-0, 6-1.

George Cartledge picked up a pair of wins in the C2 singles. In the first round, Cartledge defeated Penn’s Thomas Spratt 6-1, 6-0. Tech’s Cartledge followed that up with a win over Navy’s Alex Gaines after battling to three sets. Cartledge dropped the first one 1-6, but rallied to take the next two 6-0, 6-1.

In the D2 Singles, Rafael Ribas won a pair of matches. In the first match, Ribas battled past Navy’s Josh Martin. After losing the first set 3-6, Ribas came back to take the next two 6-2, 6-2. Ribas also had a three-set battle in the next round, dropping the first one 3-6 to Wofford’s Andrew Graham, Ribas rallied to win 6-2, 6-3.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday for singles in Winston-Salem.
