CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Joao Monteiro claimed second place in the blue singles flight for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team on Sunday during the final day of the UVA Ranked +1 Invitational.
Monteiro forced UVA’s eighth-ranked Thai-Son Kwiatkowski to three sets in the final round of competition. Kwiatkowski took the first set 6-3, but Monteiro responded with a 6-4 decision in the second. The UVA player came back strong in the third set to win it 6-1, claiming the flight title.
Aaron Gomez also had a win on the final day, defeating Kentucky’s Trey Yates with straight set scores of 7-5, 7-6(5).
The Hokies return to the court Oct. 3-12 at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
