BLACKSBURG, Va. - Senior Hunter Koontz was named first team VaSID Men's Tennis All-State while juniors Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini earned second team honors, as announced Wednesday by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.
Koontz had a strong senior campaign for the Hokies, earning his first national ranking this season after compiling an impressive 19-2 record in dual play. He finishes the season 113th nationally and eighth regionally. This season marked the first All-ACC team honors for Koontz and he was also named the ITA Atlantic Region Most Improved (Senior) Player.
Bjerrehus finished the season ranked 52nd nationally and fifth in the region after representing the Hokies at the NCAA Men’s Singles Championship. He tallied a 25-12 record and was 17-7 in duals. Bjerrehus earned All-ACC Men’s Tennis honors for the third straight season. In addition, Bjerrehus was tabbed the ITA Atlantic Region Player to Watch.
Contini finished 77th nationally while coming in sixth in the region after posting a 13-7 mark in duals this season. In addition he earned his third consecutive All-ACC Men’s Tennis recognition this year.
The Hokies finished with their highest final ranking for in program history at 18th, eclipsing the previous high of 24th in 2010 after finishing with a 20-5 overall record. The All-State team is voted on by the sports information directors around the state of Virginia.
