GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech head men’s tennis coach Jim Thompson has been named the 2015 Atlantic Coach Conference Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year while Andreas Bjerrehus, Amerigo Contini, Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro receive All-ACC honors as announced by Commissioner John Swofford on Monday.
This marks Thompson’s first ACC Coach of the Year honor since the Hokies joined the league 10 years ago. He has guided Tech to a 19-4 record overall while going 10-2 in the conference this season. In addition, Thompson has helped four players reach the All-ACC team this year. Thompson previously won Big East Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and has been the ITA Regional Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2010.
Bjerrehus and Contini pick up second-team honors, marking both players’ third straight season of recognition on the All-ACC team.
Bjerrehus has tallied a 16-6 mark in duals, including 8-4 in the ACC. He has claimed seven wins this year over nationally ranked opponents. Contini is 13-6 in duals, including a 10-4 record in the No. 1 spot. Both players have been nationally ranked all season with Bjerrehus currently at 37th and Contini at 64th.
Monteiro earns honors for the second consecutive season and has tallied a 14-4 record this spring with a 9-2 mark in the No. 3 singles. The junior is currently ranked at No. 121 with a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. Koontz picks up his first All-ACC recognition after putting together a strong senior campaign. He is 18-2 in the spring with three wins over nationally ranked foes and is ranked at No. 105 in the ITA standings.
This is the first time since joining the ACC that the Hokies have had four players on the All-Conference team. The last time four Hokies earned conference honors in the same season was in 1996 when Tech was a member of the Atlantic 10.
