BLACKSBURG – The 33rd-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team, coming off a 14-day break, will take to the road to face College of Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 21. Match time is set for noon at Patriots Point Tennis Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
Virginia Tech (5-1) moved up in the rankings after defeating then-ranked No. 22 Penn State 4-1 the last time out. The Hokies dropped the doubles point, but came back in singles with wins from Amerigo Contini (No. 1), Andreas Bjerrehus (No. 2), Hunter Koontz (No. 4) and Florian Nicoud (No. 6).
Contini is the topped ranked player for the Hokies this season and is 52nd in the most recent ITA standings. The junior is undefeated in the dual season at 5-0 in the No. 1. Bjerrehus was tabbed 73rd in the poll and has put together a 4-1 mark this spring in the No. 2. Nicoud rounds out the rankings for the Hokies at 123rd and has a 4-1 record this spring with matches in the No. 4 and No. 6.
Koontz is also undefeated this spring at 5-0 with wins in the No. 2, 3 and 4. Joao Monteiro has a 3-0 mark and newcomer Edoardo Tessaro is 3-1.
The Cougars (4-2) played a double-header last weekend, splitting the results with a 7-0 win over Florida A&M before falling to 32nd-ranked Florida State, 5-1. CofC’s lone point against the Seminoles came from Vasily Kichigin in the No. 4 singles, earning him CAA Player of the Week honors last week. He is undefeated this season at 6-0. Charlie Ghriskey Zack Lewis each have 4-2 marks in duals.
Following Saturday’s match, the Hokies will be back in the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center next weekend, hosting a double-header on Saturday, Feb. 28. Tech will take on UMBC at 10 a.m. before squaring off against St. Bonaventure at 3:30 p.m.
