No. 37 Virginia Tech downs No. 22 Penn State, 4-1
Hokies claim four wins in singles to clinch match

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 37th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team knocked off 22nd-ranked Penn State, 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The match got off to an exciting start as the two teams battled for the doubles point. Virginia Tech (5-1) won the first match on court one as Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini paired up to defeat Matt Barry and Alex Fennell 6-2.

Penn State (3-2) responded, with a win on court three where Michael Reilly and Roman Trkulja held on for the win over the Tech duo of Hunter Koontz and Florian Nicoud.

The deciding match came down to court three where the two teams battled to a tiebreaker. The Nittany Lions’ pair of Leo Stakhovsky and Aws Laaribi outlasted Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro for a 7-5 hard fought win, giving PSU the 1-0 lead heading into singles.

Virginia Tech came out strong in singles with Koontz getting the Hokies on the board with a win at the No. 4, defeating Trkulja 6-2, 6-2. On court two, Tech’s 61st-ranked Bjerrehus defeated Fennell 6-2, 6-2 to give the Hokies the 2-1 lead over Penn State.

The Hokies’ 94th-ranked Nicoud continued the streak by defeating Nika Dolidze 6-2, 6-4 on court six. Virginia Tech clinched their fourth point and the victory at the No. 1 as No. 35 Contini defeated Stakhosky 7-5, 6-3.

The matches at No. 3 and no. 5 went unfinished. Both Virginia Tech players had claimed the first sets with Monteiro up on Barry on court three and Edoardo Tessaro leading Laaribi on court five.

Virginia Tech will return to the court for a road match on Saturday, Feb. 21 when the Hokies travel to College of Charleston for a noon match in Charleston, South Carolina.
