No. 34 Hokies roll past Marquette, 7-0

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The 34th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team rolled past Marquette, 7-0 to claim the Hill City Cup on Saturday afternoon at the Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, Va.

The Hokies (4-1) got out to the early lead, claiming the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Hunter Koontz and Edoardo Tessaro teamed up to shut out Marquette’s (1-3) Andre Romanello and Gleb Sklyr, 6-0 in the No. 3.

In the No. 1 Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini paired up for the first time since the fall to defeat Daniel Fernandez and Vukasin Teofanovic, 6-1.

The match on court two went unfinished, but Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro led the Eagles’ Nick Dykema and Kristiyan Trukov, 4-3.

Tech’s 35th-ranked Contini gave the Hokies a 2-0 lead in the match, defeating Teofaniovic 6-0, 6-2 on court one. Monteiro followed with a 6-4, 6-2 decision in the No. 4 over Romanello.

Koontz scored the point to clinch the match for the Hokies as he downed Dykema 6-0, 7-6(3) in the No. 3.

The Hokies’ 61st-ranked Bjerrehus put Tech on top 5-0 as he dropped Fernandez 6-4, 6-2 on court two. Florian Nicoud, ranked 94th for the Hokies, secured the point in the No. 6, defeating Trukov 6-3, 6-0.

Tessaro battled with Sklyr in the No. 5 after taking the first set 6-4, the Eagles’ player came back in the second for a 6-2 win over Tessaro. The Tech newcomer responded to complete the Hokies’ shutout with a 6-2 win in the third set.

The Hokies return to the court on Saturday, Feb. 7 when they host Penn State at 1 p.m. The match will be broadcast live online via HokiesExtra.
