No. 7 North Carolina holds off No. 38 Hokies
Tech battles with top-10 Tar Heels at ITA Kickoff Weekend

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 38th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team battled seventh-ranked North Carolina, with five singles matches going to three sets, before falling 4-1 during the final day of the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Tech (3-1) fell behind after giving up the doubles point to start the match. The Tar Heels (6-0) claimed wins on courts two and three to secure the point. In the No. 1, Andreas Bjerrehus and Hunter Koontz were tied at 5-5 with Brett Clark and Brayden Schnur but the match went unfinished once the point was decided.

The Heels took the 2-0 lead in the match with a win on court two where 27th-ranked Ronnie Schneider picked up the win over Tech’s 61st-ranked Bjerrehus, 6-2, 7-5.

UNC followed it up with a win on No. 6 to go on top 3-0 as Oystein Steiro and the Hokies’ 94th-ranked Florian Nicoud played to three sets. Steiro took the first set 6-4, but Nicoud came back in the second to win 6-4. The Heels’ player secured the win with a 6-2 decision in the third.

The Hokies got on the board with the next finished match as Joao Monteiro claimed the win on court four. Monteiro won the first set 7-5, but Esben Hess-Olsen took the second 6-1. Monteiro dropped Hess-Olsen 6-1 in the third to claim the point for Tech.

Carolina got the match winning point in the No. 5 where Jack Murray came back for the win over Edoardo Tessaro. After falling in the opening set, 7-6(2), Murray responded to win the next two with scores of 6-3, 6-3.

Tech’s Koontz was ahead on court three, but the match went unfinished once UNC had clinched the win. Koontz won the first set 6-1, but Clark answered in the second, 6-4. In the final set, Koontz led Clark 5-4.

The Hokies’ Amerigo Contini, ranked 35th, was in a third set against No. 2 Schnur. After falling in the tiebreaker in the opening set, 7-6(3), Contini rallied in the second for a 6-3 win. Schnur had the lead in the final set, 5-2.

Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Hill City Cup in Lynchburg, Va. The Hokies will face Marquette at 1 p.m. in the neutral site match.
