CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 38th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team defeated 36th-ranked Alabama, 4-1 on Friday morning during the opening day of the 2015 ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Cone-Kanefield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Virginia Tech (3-0) fell behind early in the match after dropping the doubles point to the Tide (2-1). The Hokies prevented the sweep though with a win in the No. 3 as Jai Corbett and Joao Monteiro teamed up to defeated Andrew Goodwin and Danny Kerznerman, 6-4.
The Hokies quickly tied it up with Hunter Koontz taking court three over Nikko Madregallejo, 6-3, 6-0. Tech moved into the lead with a win in the No. 1 where the Hokies’ 35th-ranked Amerigo Contini downed Becker O’Shaughnessey, 6-3, 6-4.
Tech’s 61st-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus gave the Hokies a 3-1 lead in the match with a straight-set win at No. 2 over Stuart Kenyon, 6-3, 6-2. Corbett clinched the match for the Hokies as he downed Andrew Goodwin, 6-0, 7-6 with a close 8-6 tiebreak win in the second set.
The Hokies await the winner of the Friday afternoon match between No. 7 North Carolina and No. 44 Oregon. Tech will face the winner at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
