Virginia Tech shuts out James Madison, 7-0
Hokies win match two on the opening day of the season

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech’s 38th-ranked men’s tennis team shut out James Madison Saturday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, completing the opening day sweep after winning the morning match over Coastal Carolina.

The Hokies (2-0) began the afternoon by claiming the doubles point as all three Hokie pairs defeated their JMU opponents. On court one, Andreas Bjerrehus and Jai Corbett defeated Miljan Ruzic and Stephen Goldman 6-1.

Edoardo Tessaro and Amerigo Contini teamed up to defeat Sebastian Salinas and Robert Stirling 6-4 in the No. 1. Florian Nicoud and Hunter Koontz paired up to complete the doubles sweep defeating Brett Moorhead and Maxi Branth 6-1 on court three.

In singles, Koontz defeated Branth in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 for the second point of the day on court two. No. 35 ranked Contini followed with a victory over Stirling 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1.

Tech’s 94th-ranked Nicoud clinched the victory for the Hokies with the team’s fourth point of the day by defeating Ruzic 6-2, 6-2 on court 4.

Tessaro defeated Salinas 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 and was shortly followed by Aaron Gomez claiming a win over Goldman 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 6.

Corbett finished off a perfect afternoon for the Hokies by defeating Moorhead 6-2, 6-2 to secure the sweep.

The Hokies return to action January 23rd against Alabama at UNC as part of the ITA Kick Off Weekend.
