Hokies earn preseason rankings
Tech picked 38th as team plus several Hokies recognized individually

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team has earned a preseason ranking of 38th while juniors Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus along with sophomore Florian Nicoud earn national singles recognition as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Contini is ranked 35th in singles while Bjerrehus has earned a ranking of 61st. Nicoud appears in the list for the first time in his career, making the debut at 94th.

Contini played to a 9-5 record this fall, including a 5-1 mark at the ITA Atlantic Regional where he advanced to the singles finals. The Parma, Italy native represented the Hokies at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships where he claimed a win over 13th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald in the opening round.

Bjerrehus put together an 8-4 record in the fall while going 2-3 against nationally ranked foes. The Aarhus, Denmark native had a big win at the ITA All-American, defeating Duke’s then 27th-ranked Jason Tahir in straight sets after coming out of the qualifying draw to advance into the main draw at the event.

Nicoud boasted an 11-4 record during fall competition and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional after defeating UVA’s then-ranked 74th Mac Styslinger. The St. Marcellin, France native, won the draw at the UVA Fall Classic.

The three are also ranked in the Atlantic Regional with Contini at third, Bjerrehus in sixth and Nicoud ranked seventh. Joining them in the regional rankings is Joao Monteiro in 14th. Monteiro went 8-4 in the fall and claimed the flight title at the Ivy Plus event. In addition, he joined Contini and Bjerrehus in representing the Hokies at the ITA All-American.

Contini and Bjerrehus are also ranked sixth regionally in doubles, finishing the fall with a 3-3 mark. Monteiro is ranked in doubles with teammate Jai Corbett in ninth. The pair finished 4-1 in the fall and advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional.

The Hokies open dual competition on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they open with a double-header at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, hosting James Madison and Coastal Carolina.
