FLUSHING, N.Y. – Virginia Tech junior men’s tennis player Amerigo Contini claimed a win on the opening day of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercolleigate Championships on Thursday morning at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Contini, ranked 14th nationally, defeated the 13th-ranked Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA. Contini claimed the opening set, 6-3, but McDonald, seeded third overall, came back strong in the second to take it 6-1. In the final set, Contini rallied back for the 6-4 win to advance.
In the next round, Contini will face a familiar face in UNC’s Brayden Schnur who ranks seventh nationally. The two met last season in duals with the Tar Heels’ player holding on for the win in three sets.
Friday will feature two rounds of singles.
