ORLANDO, Fla. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team picked up three wins in singles on Friday during the second day of competition at the 2014 USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational at ESPN Wild World of Sports at Walt Disney World.
The Hokies Joao Monteiro picked up a win over Georgia Tech’s Michael Kay with straight set scores of 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32.
In the next round, Monteiro squared off against Southern Cal’s 47th-ranked Max de Vroome. Monteiro took the first set, 7-5, but the Trojans’ player came back taking the next two, 6-4, 6-3.
In the singles consolation draw, Aaron Gomez claimed a win against Stetson’s Nathan Debut, winning the opening set 7-6(0). Gomez was up 2-0 on Debut in the second set before the Hatters’ player retired.
Florian Nicoud also secured a win for the Hokies in the consolation draw. In the first set, Nicoud held on for the 7-6(6) win against Florida’s Jordan Belga. Nicoud took the second set 6-3 to claim the match.
The Hokies will return to the court on Saturday with matches beginning at 8 a.m.
