CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Tech junior Amerigo Contini advanced to the finals of the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional before falling in the final round on Tuesday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Tech’s 14th-ranked Contini squared off against UVA’s 28th-ranked Ryan Shane in the final round. Contini fell in the first set 6-2, but came back in the second looking to force a third, but the Cavalier junior held on in the tiebreaker for the 7-6(6) win.
Contini earned a bye in the opening round, but got on the court in the second round to take the 6-3, 6-4 win over ODU’s Michael Weindl. He followed that up with a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Henrik Wiersholm of UVA. In the round of 16, Contini downed Penn State’s Alex Fennell with decisive straight-set scores of 6-1, 6-1 to move into the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal round pitted Contini against a familiar face where he defeated teammate Florian Nicoud 6-4, 7-6(5). In the semifinals, Contini faced a battle, going to three-sets against George Washington’s 91st-ranked Francisco Dias. Contini claimed the opening set 6-4, but Dias came back to hold on for the 7-6(5) win in the second. The Tech player rallied in the third for the 7-6(4) win to set up today’s final.
Tech will be back on the court Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the Disney Tournament.
