CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team continued strong play, advancing in singles and doubles, on Saturday during the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional at the Dan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Virginia Tech advanced four players in singles as well as two doubles teams during Saturday’s competition hosted by the University of Virginia.

The Hokies’ 14th-ranked and top-seeded Amerigo Contini moved into the round of 16 after picking up a pair of wins. He defeated Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl in straight sets with scores of 6-3, 6-4. In the next round, Contini downed the host team’s Henrik Wiersholm 6-2, 6-2.

Tech’s Andreas Bjerrehus, ranked 58th in the ITA, defeated JMU’s Brett Moorhead 6-0, 6-2. Bjerrehus dispatched Norfolk State’s Dominik Pascal 6-3, 6-4 to move in to the round of 16.

Joao Monteiro also claimed a win for the Hokies, defeating Rob Stirling of JMU 6-3, 6-1. In the next round Monteiro faced Adam Moundir of ODU as the two players went to three sets. Monteiro dropped the first set 6-3, but rallied back to take the next two 7-5, 6-1.

Also advancing to the round of 16 is Florian Nicoud after defeating Penn State’s Nika Dolidze 6-4, 7-6(5). He followed that up with a win over UMBC’s Justin Carter in straight set scores of 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles action, the Hokies had two teams move into the quarterfinals. Jai Corbett and Monteiro paired up for an 8-4 win over William & Mary’s Will Juggins and Damon Niquet.

Nicoud paired up with Aaron Gomez to defeat Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe and Michiel Meekers 8-6.

Sunday's play begins at 10:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals of doubles, followed by the round of 16 of singles. Admission to the tournament is free at the Snyder Tennis Center. In case of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the Boar's Head Sports Club.
