Hokies advance in singles and doubles at ITA Atlantic Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a strong opening day on Friday at the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional, advancing in both singles and doubles in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Tech had just two players compete in singles on the opening day as six others earned opening round byes. George Cartledge defeated Temples Santiago Canete in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Rafael Ribas also picked up the first round win, defeating Daniel Gray of UMBC. Ribas claimed the win in the first set 6-3, but Gray held on to take the second 7-5. The Tech player came back strong in the third, winning 6-4.

All of the Hokies will be in action in singles on Saturday with the schedule listed below.

Tech also had everyone on the court for doubles today. The Hokies’ 17th-ranked pair of Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini earned an opening round bye as the top-seeded team, but picked up the second round win, defeating Chris Seitz and Bradley Noyes of Villanova, 8-1.

Joao Monteiro and Jai Corbett paired up in singles to down JMU’s Rob Stirling and Stephen Goldman 8-4 in the first. In the second round, Monteiro and Corbett defeated Joseph Cohen and Matthew Kritzinger of VCU, 8-2.

Tech’s Florian Nicoud and Aaron Gomez claimed the 8-3 decision over George Mason’s Nick Barker and Aaron Capitel in the opening round. Nicoud and Gomez took the second round match 8-3 against UMBC’s duo of Justin Carter and Melker Svard.

Saturday's play begins at 9 a.m. with the round of 16 of doubles, followed by the round of 64 and round of 32 singles. Admission to the tournament is free at the Snyder Tennis Center.
