Tech to open play at ITA Atlantic Regional
Men's tennis represented by eight in Charlottesville

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will be in action Oct. 17-21 in the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by the University of Virginia at the Dan Snyder Tennis Center Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Representing the Hokies are Amerigo Contini, Andreas Bjerrehus, Joao Monteiro, Florian Nicoud, Jai Corbett, Aaron Gomez, George Cartledge and Rafael Ribas at the five-day event.

Tournament play began on Thursday with the qualifying round of singles, but all of the Hokies bypassed that round and were seeded straight into the main draw. Leading the way is top-seed Contini who is ranked 14th in the ITA singles standings and has earned a bye in the opening round.

Several other Hokies have earned byes in the opening rounds including fifth-seed and 58th-ranked Bjerrehus. Monteiro is seeded 9-16 while Nicoud, Corbett and Gomez have been seeded 17-35, earning opening round byes.

Cartledge will face a qualifier in the opening round and Ribas is set to take-on UMBC’s Daniel Gray.

On the doubles side, 17th-ranked Contini and Bjerrehus have earned the No. 1 seed and have a bye in the first round.

The rest of the Hokies will be in action during the first round of play as Monteiro and Corbett are seeded eighth and slated to face JMU’s Rob Stirling and Stephen Goldman. Nicoud and Gomez will face Aaron Capitel and Nick Barker of George Mason. The final Hokie pair Cartledge and Ribas are set to face Georgetown’s Daniel Khanin and Jack Murphy.

Joining the Hokies and the host team in the event are: Bucknell, George Mason, Temple, Duquesne, St. Joe’s, Navy, Old Dominion, Villanova, Longwood, Richmond, Norfolk State, James Madison, Liberty, VCU, Penn State, UMBC, George Washington, Radford and William & Mary.

Tournament Schedule
Fri. Oct. 17 – Round of 64 and 32 doubles, followed by round of 128 singles
Sat. Oct. 18 – Round of 16 doubles, followed by round of 64 and 32 singles and one round of consolation singles for those that did not advance to 64
Sun. Oct. 19 – Quarterfinal doubles, followed by round of 16 singles
Mon. Oct. 20 – Quarterfinal and semifinal singles, followed by semifinal doubles
Tues. Oct. 21 – Singles and Doubles Finals
