CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomores Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud advance for the Virginia Tech men’s tennis team, into the semifinals of their respective singles flights on Saturday during the second day of competition at the UVA Fall Classic at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Corbett defeated George Mason’s Tanner Baine in the opening round of the blue flight in straight set scores of 6-3, 6-2. The Tech player followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 win over VCU’s Michael Voscek to advance into the semifinals where he will face UVA’s Jonny Cornish.
In the white singles, Nicoud had a bye in the opening round, but squared off against Igor Braga of Norfolk State in the second round. Nicoud dispatched of Braga handily, knocking off the Norfolk State player, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals, Nicoud is slated to face JMU’s Brett Moorhead.
Tech’s George Cartledge battled in the opening round of the black singles, taking Cornell’s Chris Vrabel to three sets. Cartledge won the first set 7-5, but Vrabel came back to take the next two with scores of 6-4, 6-2. The Hokies’ freshman came back in his next match to pick up the 7-5, 6-2 win over UMBC’s Jeremy Gibbens Schneider to move into the semifinals of the back draw where he will face Jason Burgess of Liberty on Sunday.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday morning for the final two rounds of competition at the UVA Fall Classic.
