CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team claimed a pair of third place finishes in doubles at the 2014 UVA Fall Classic on Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Due to weather, play was adjusted with all three rounds of doubles being played during the opening day of the tournament. Singles competition will begin on Saturday.
Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud paired up in the orange doubles to pick up a win in the opening round, defeating Old Dominion’s Michael Weindl and Darragh Glavin, 8-3.
In the next round the Tech duo fell to a duo from UMBC to move into the third place bracket. Corbett and Nicoud bounced back to defeat Radford’s Patrick O’Keefe and Janken Thoen, 8-4 to take third place.
In the black doubles, George Cartledge and Rafael Ribas teamed up to defeat UMBC’s Justin Lansinger and Kevin Hsieh 8-3 to open the tournament.
The Hokies’ pair fell to a tandem from Princeton, but came back in the third place bracket to defeat Louis Ishizaka of VCU and Daniel Grauel of Norfolk State, 8-6.
Tech will be back on the court on Saturday to start singles play. Matches are slated to begin at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
