CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team had a solid opening day at the UVA Ranked+1 on Friday in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Tech’s 14th-ranked and one-seeded Amerigo Contini downed Old Dominion’s Zvonomir Podvinski in straight sets with scores of 6-1, 6-2 in the Orange Draw.
Aaron Gomez also claimed a win in the Orange Draw, upsetting ETSU’s 60th-ranked Ettore Zito in a three-set match. After dropping the first set 6-1, Gomez came back to take the next two, 6-4, 6-4.
In the Blue Draw, the Hokies’ 58th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus defeated Cahit Kapukrian of George Washington in straight set scores of 6-3, 6-1.
The Hokies also faired well in the doubles Orange Draw as the 17th-ranked pair of Bjerrehus and Contini teamed up for a pair of wins. The duo claimed an 8-2 decision over Nicky Kunz of Wake Forest and ODU’s Podvinski.
In the second round, Bjerrehus and Contini defeated ETSU’s David Biosca and Diego Nunez, 8-3.
The Hokies will return to action on Saturday for the second day of competition at the Snyder Tennis Center.
