PRINCETON, N.J. – Junior Joao Monteiro advanced in singles and doubles during the opening day of the Farnsworth Ivy Plus in Princeton, New Jersey.
Monteiro picked up a win in the Nassau singles draw in a three-set battle against host-team Princeton’s Alex Day. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Monteiro came back to take the next two with scores of 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Monteiro paired up with Florian Nicoud in the Orange Draw, defeating the sixth-seeded pair of Sam Fleck and Colin Sinclair, 8-7(6).
Tech’s George Cartledge also picked up a win in doubles, pairing up with Columbia’s Danie Grunberger in the Black Draw. The pair defeated Princeton’s Mohamed ElTonbari and Dan Richardson, 8-3.
Cartledge and Nicoud also claimed wins in the singles consolation round of their respective draws. Cartledge defeated Luke Adamus of Monmouth, 6-2, 7-5 in the Jadwin Draw while NIcoud claimed the 6-1, 6-1 win over Marist’s Jan Dernic in the Cordish Draw.
The Hokies will return to the court on Saturday for the second day of competition at the Lenz Tennis Center.
