BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will have seven players on the court this weekend, splitting time at two events as the Hokies travel to Charlottesville, Virginia for the UVA Ranked+1 and Princeton, New Jersey to compete in the Farnsworth Ivy Plus.
Making the trip to UVA are 14th-ranked Amerigo Contini, 58th-ranked Andreas Bjerrehus, Aaron Gomez and Jai Corbett. Traveling to Princeton are Joao Monteiro, Florian Nicoud and George Cartledge.
The UVA event features players from East Tennessee State, Furman, George Washington, Louisville, Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Wake Forest and host-team Virginia. The tournament will consist of two singles draws and two doubles draws. Two rounds of doubles will be played on Friday followed by a round of singles at the Snyder Tennis Center.
Contini enters the season with one of the highest rankings in singles for a Tech player in program history. The junior is coming off a 26-10 season including an 18-6 mark in duals and earned the one-seed in the Orange Draw for this weekend’s event. Contini will face Old Dominion’s Zvonomir Podvinski in the opening round.
Bjerrehus also had a strong sophomore campaign, finishing 23-12 and 14-10 in duals. The junior is seeded second in the Blue Draw and will square off against Cahit Kapukrian of George Washington.
The duo is also ranked in the ITA doubles at 17th. Contini and Bjerrehus have been ranked as high as eighth in their career together and earn the one-seed in the Orange Draw. The pair will face a doubles team made up of Nicky Kunz of Wake Forest and ODU’s Podvinski.
Gomez will also be competing in the Orange Draw singles and will face second seeded Ettore Zito of Middle Tennessee. Zito is ranked 60th in the ITA entering the season. Corbett is slated for the Blue Draw, going up against ETSU’s 97th-ranked David Biosca who is seeded fifth. Gomez and Corbett will also pair up in doubles for the Blue Draw, facing the one seed in GW’s Francisco Dias and Julius Tverijonas.
The Ivy Plus tournament features 128 players from 22 teams, including all eight Ivy League teams as well as Michigan, Iowa, Tulane, Miami, Notre Dame, Pepperdine, St. John’s, Buffalo, Monmouth, Marist, Army, NJIT and Binghamton. The tournament has eight 16-player singles flights and two doubles draws with 32 pairs.
Monteiro is in the Nassau Draw and will play the host team’s Alex Day in the opening round. Competing in the Cordish Draw, Nicoud will face Harvard’s Jean Thirouin while Cartlege will square off against Columbia’s Richard Pham in the Jadwin Draw.
Nicoud and Monteiro will also team up in doubles in the Orange Draw, facing sixth seeded Sam Fleck and Colin Sinclair of Cornell.
