ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Aaron Gomez advanced in the Division 2 singles flight while sophomores Jai Corbett and Florian Nicoud moved on in doubles during the opening day of the 47th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Georgia.
Gomez defeated Florida Atlantic’s Ignacio Jimenez in straight sets with scores of 6-0, 6-1. George Cartledge had a first round bye in the Division 2 singles and will hit the court tomorrow to open play.
In doubles, Corbett and Nicoud paired up in the Division 2 flight, earning a bye in the first round. The duo teamed up in the second round to defeat Daniel Hernandez and Rob Mitchell of Lipscomb, 8-5.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. with the next round of doubles, followed by two rounds of singles.
