BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will open the 2014-15 season on Friday, Sept. 12 at the 47th Annual Southern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by the University of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The four-day event features 139 players from 26 schools.
Competing for the Hokies this weekend are Florian Nicoud, Aaron Gomez, George Cartledge and Jai Corbett. Nicoud and Corbett are coming off strong freshmen campaigns. Nicoud posted a 17-11 overall record, including 10-7 in the spring while Corbett was 17-13 and 11-7 in duals. Gomez finished last season 15-13 and 9-9 in the dual competition. This will be the first event for Cartledge as a Hokie after redshirting last season.
Corbett and Nicoud will both compete in the Division I singles and doubles bracket while Gomez and Cartledge are in the Division II draw for both singles and doubles.
The field will be divided into three singles divisions and two doubles divisions. No-ad scoring will be in place for both singles and doubles, and in doubles competition, matches prior to the semifinals will consist of an 8-game pro set (tiebreak at 7-all), with the semifinals and finals doubles matches consisting of two out of three sets (to 6) with a match tiebreak in lieu of the third set.
Play is scheduled to begin Friday at 8 a.m. with Division I and Division II singles round of 64 matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Both divisions’ doubles matches will begin following the singles. The finals for all divisions are slated for Monday. Updated draws, schedules and results will be posted throughout the tournament at gado.gs/sic.
