SKILLMAN, N.J. – The Virginia Tech men’s tennis team has been selected as one of 80 recipients of the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team award. Additionally the Hokies had four student-athletes earned ITA Scholar-Athletes honors.

The team award marks the seventh time the men’s team has received the honor in the past 10 years, having been recognized previously in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013. This marks the second honor for both Amerigo Contini and Hunter Koontz. Joao Monteiro and Rafael Ribas earn their first nod to the team. Contini, Koontz and Monteiro also represented the Hokies on the ACC All-Academic team.

From the ACC, joining the Hokies on the team list were Boston College, Duke, Georgia Tech and Louisville while Clemson, FSU, UNC, NC State and Wake Forest all had players recognize as scholar-athletes.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2013 and spring 2014).

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
