WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Sophomores Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus have been recognized by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), earning all-state honors as announced Thursday by the organization.
Contini was named to the First Team All-State after a strong sophomore campaign in which he finished 24th in the final ITA singles standings. For the second consecutive season, Contini represented the Hokies at the NCAA Singles Championship and earned a spot on the All-ACC First Team. The Parma, Italy native tallied a 26-10 overall record, including an 18-6 mark in duals, all at the No. 1. Contini posted a 13-6 mark against ranked opponents over the course of the season, including a win over Marcos Giron of UCLA, who went on to claim the NCAA singles title. Contini later finished third in the final regional rankings.
Bjerrehus and Contini were also a formidable doubles pair for the Hokies during the season, finishing 49th in the final ITA poll. The pair teamed up for a 15-10 record on the season and represented the Hokies at both the ITA National Indoor Championships and the ITA All-America. Bjerrehus and Contini were fourth in the final regional rankings.
The All-State teams are based on a vote by the sports information directors from around the state.
