ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech sophomore Amerigo Contini was eliminated in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Singles Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

Florida’s Florent Diep defeated Contini in three sets, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1. Diep, ranked 51^st in the ITA rankings, was coming off a three-set win over Elon’s Cameron Silverman in the opening round. Contini, ranked 20^th, defeated Illinois’ Tim Kopinski, a replacement for seventh-seeded Axel Alvarez Llamas of Oklahoma, in the first round.

In the opening set, Contini used two late breaks to pull away from Diep and win the set, 6-3. Contini and Diep both held their serve throughout the second set, but Diep earned a break to go ahead 6-5 and serve for the set. However, Contini answered with his own break, sending the set to a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Diep won four consecutive points on his way to a 7-1 win.

For the second consecutive day, Contini headed to a third set. Diep earned an early break and never looked back, winning the final set, 6-1.

Contini finished the season with a 26-11 overall record and was 18-7 in dual matches. The Tech sophomore was named to the All-ACC Men’s Tennis first team for the second consecutive year.
