ATHENS, Ga. – Virginia Tech sophomore Amerigo Contini will open the 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. against Oklahoma’s Axel Alvarez Llamas in Athens, Ga. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Contini, appearing in the NCAA singles tournament for the second consecutive year, enters the championship ranked 20th in the ITA singles rankings while Llamas is seventh. Llamas is the seventh overall seed in the tournament. Last year, Contini dropped his first round match, 7-6 (5), 6-3, to 15th-ranked Matija Pecotic of Princeton.
The Hokies’ No. 1 singles player has tallied an 18-7 record this season in duals and is 25-10 overall. Contini was named to the All-ACC men’s tennis team for the second consecutive year. Last year, he was named the ACC’s Freshman of the Year.
Llamas, a sophomore, posted a record of 19-4 in duals this season. He was named to the All-Big 12 men’s tennis team in both singles and doubles. Last year, Llamas appeared on the All-Big 12 team in addition to being named the conference’s co-Freshman of the Year.
Virginia Tech and Oklahoma met in the regular season at the ITA Kick-Off weekend in Norman, Okla., but Contini and Llamas did not meet on the court.
Contini joins a list of 13 former Hokies who have represented Tech at the NCAA singles event.
