Hokies to open NCAA Championship against No. 19 Vanderbilt
Tech will travel to Nashville to face host team in first round

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 36th-ranked Virginia Tech men’s tennis team will travel to Nashville, Tenn. to face 19th-ranked Vanderbilt in the opening round of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship. Tech and the Commodores will play at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET) on Saturday, May 10 at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center.

Tech (14-11) earns the No. 3 seed in the regional while Vandy (16-10) has been tabbed as the No. 2 seed. The two teams will be joined in Nashville by No. 1 seed and Ivy League champion No. 16 Columbia (20-1), who is seeded 16th overall in the field, and Atlantic Sun Conference champion No. 68 East Tennessee State (14-8).

Virginia Tech is led by All-ACC First Team selection Amerigo Contini who holds an 18-6 record in the No. 1 singles and is ranked 20th in the ITA singles standings. Contini has tallied a 12-5 record against nationally ranked opponents this season and has earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championship field.

Andreas Bjerrehus has also been strong for the Hokies this season, earning All-ACC Second Team honors after going 14-10 in duals, including an 11-9 record in the No. 2. Bjerrehus is ranked 92nd by the ITA.

In addition to being ranked in singles, Contini and Bjerrehus are ranked in doubles at 46th. The duo is 25-11 overall this season and 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles.

Joao Monteiro has also been strong for Tech this season with a 16-7 record in duals to earn All-ACC Third Team honors. Freshman Jai Corbett is 11-6 in the spring while junior Hunter Koontz has tallied a 13-11 mark for the Hokies.

The Commodores are led by a pair of All-SEC honorees. Gonzales Austin, ranked 21st by the ITA, has tallied a 15-4 record including a 10-4 mark in the No. 1. Ryan LIpman is 59th in the ITA standings after posting a 15-5 record while going 13-3 in the No. 2.

With this year’s at-large bid, the Hokies make their eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech and Vanderbilt last met during the 2010-11 season in the opening round of the NCAAs when the Hokies defeated the Commodores, 4-2 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Columbia and ETSU will square off in the opening round beginning at 10 a.m CT on Saturday, May 10. The winners of the opening round matches will advance to play at 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, May 11.
